Dear Friends:
Last night we had an interesting discussion about the state of the Conservative movement and what, if anything, should be done to revive and grow our numbers. It is a complicated issue and the class went a bit longer than we usually do, but I would encourage you to take a look at the video if you did not participate in last night’s class, and share any thoughts with me if you would care to do so.
Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Dobbs case which overturned Roe v. Wade and returned the question of abortion rights to the states. Since then a number of states have banned or severely restricted abortion rights while others like Maryland have strengthened abortion rights and made it easier for people from other states to come to their states and obtain an abortion. Over the past couple of years I have written and taught about Judaism and abortion rights. Rather than repeat what I have said before, let me point you towards the videos of three classes where I have taught about Jewish approaches to the question of abortion:
Judaism and Abortion, Part I:
Judaism and Abortion, Part II:
Abortion Bans and the First Amendment:
As a reminder, I am having drop-in hours on Thursday afternoon from 2 to 4 at the shul. You do not need to make an appointment -- that would negate the whole point of drop-in hours -- but I’d urge you to check and make sure I am there regardless as sometimes there are unavoidable pastoral or other emergencies which might take me away from the building.
As always, if I can do anything for you or you need to talk, please contact me at rabbi@kehilatshalom.org or 301-977-0768 rather than through the synagogue office. I am happy to meet you at the synagogue by appointment. I have been spending more time in the synagogue recently but if you want to speak with me it’s best to make an appointment rather than assuming I will be there when you stop by.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Charles L. Arian
