Jewish Outreach
The Jewish Outreach Committee is active on a number of
fronts to help Jews in need in the upper
Montgomery County area. We are helping Russian
immigrants learn English, study to become U.S.
citizens, and learn about Judaism. Kehilat Shalom
provides Russian families with High Holiday tickets,
a community Seder experience, and, in partnership
with the
Shalom
School, an opportunity for Russian teenagers to
become B’nai Mitzvah. At the beginning of each
school year, we provide school supplies to children
whose families cannot afford them. We stock an
emergency pantry of basic food items that is
available to those in need through the Jewish Social
Services Agency. In addition, we assist
incapacitated people with shopping, doctor visits,
check writing, etc. For more information or to
volunteer for these programs, please contact Mike
Goldman.
Action in
Montgomery
(AIM)
AIM is a
countywide, multi-racial, interfaith, non-partisan
citizens organization with 32 member congregations
representing more than 31,000 adult residents of
Montgomery
County. AIM builds political power in order to pursue social justice
objectives to improve the quality of life for all
citizens of
Montgomery
County. AIM starts each issue cycle with hundreds
of house meetings attended by over 3,000 citizens,
where issues of concern are identified and
discussed. These issues are synthesized to
determine the issues of greatest concern to the AIM
congregations and community, and then after
extensive research, proposed solutions are
developed. AIM does not endorse candidates for
office; rather, AIM challenges politicians to commit
to the AIM agenda and to work with AIM to implement
solutions. Using the process outlined above, AIM
has made progress on important issues such as
housing, immigration, education, and transportation.
For more information, please contact Larry
Froehlich or Laura Wallace.
Community of Kindness
When one of our congregants is in need of
assistance, the Community of Kindness mobilizes to
support the congregant and the member’s family.
Whether it is providing leaders and participants for
a shiva minyan or meals and transportation for
someone who is ill, the Community of Kindness is
there for our members in need. For more
information, please contact Carl Berger or Rabbi
Raphael.
Other Programs
Throughout the year, tikkun olam
activities are sponsored by the
Religious
School and Early Childhood Center, as well as the
adult and youth social groups. Kehilat Shalom has
the tradition of a yearly Mitzvah Day, when the
congregation comes together to work on projects that
benefit our synagogue and our community. In
addition, Kehilat Shalom is a member of Community
Ministry of Montgomery County, whose mission is to
pursue social justice in partnership with Montgomery
County’s faith communities, with an emphasis on
identifying and meeting the needs of the poor. For
more information about any of these programs, please
contact the synagogue office.
